Dominique Larue & Maja 7th - "#SOON" (Video) & Exclusive Interview

“You will re, you will regret.” Yeah, I sing the samples.

Well, by now, you may have heard #SOON, a track that we at BDTB debuted a month or so ago from Ohio emcee Dominique Larue and Indiana-Chicago-DC producer Maja 7th. Today they have released the video for the song, and along with that we are releasing the first part of some interviews that we did with them at their listening party. Dominique Larue and Maja 7th :: A Match Made in Hip Hop Heaven

Being a female emcee can be a quite a daunting task to take on considering most that make it are tossed at the public as some gimmick, and aren’t taken seriously. It’s not that I don’t doubt the talent out there, but when all we are given is the Nicki Minaj’s or Kreayshawn’s in the spotlight, the future doesn’t look bright. That was until I met Dominique Larue and the producer for her upcoming project, Maja 7th.

The two are currently finishing up a collaboration project together, entitled “Grand”. When talking to Dominique on why she chose the name for the project, she came back with, “How could something so small be so grand?”, and with that simple word the project had a general theme. Dominique currently resides in Ohio, while Maja resides in the D.C. area, and with that comes the challenge of building a cohesive project without being in the studio together. Reluctantly, Maja had this to say about Dominique, “it is a challenge, but it is a challenge she runs towards,” and once you listen to the EP you will hear that it is one that she overcomes.

The single they released today in video form, SOON, is the prefect preview for what is to come. We at Bringing Down The Band got the raw version of the EP, and when I first heard this track my ears definitely perked up. It is such a refreshing dose of hip hop. Maja’s beat has that “go-in” type of draw, and Dom’s lyrics keep you enthralled. It keeps you wanting to hear more. This back and forth highlights each artist and their medium in such a manner that neither is overbearing.

When asked about what she is hoping to accomplish with this project, she proclaims that, “I just want to be heard, I want to keep it independent and make the music I want to make. I want to find myself and find my own.” She allows you to see what she has found in herself and just has fun with it. I told her that you can really hear her smile on the track, and came back with, “It’s funny that you say that because I will give almost the same reaction, even when I am performing live because I always want to have fun making music, and really want that impression to stick.”

Maja, when talking about the production on the project, said, “Most people wouldn’t know what to do with the beats I made her.” These beats are some of his most progressive work.

What it really comes down to is how well these two work together in building a cohesive project considering they’re not actually physically around each other. The space between them geologically may seem like a disadvantage, but you wouldn’t think so from their upcoming incredible project. Soon is just the beginning for these artists and I can assure you that there is much more to come. – Brendon “Baby-D” McAvoy
